What Happens To My Placenta?

Placenta Encapsulation Services

Placenta encapsulation is a practice based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. The placenta is an organ grown for the exclusive purpose of nourishing your baby in the womb and with encapsulation it can help you heal during the postpartum period as well. Ingesting the placenta can replace vitamins, proteins, and hormones that your body needs while caring for your baby. While it is not for everyone, many women report having positive effects on their energy, mood, and milk supply.

Why Encapsulate?

Placenta Encapsulation is said to:

-Provide benefits from your bodies own natural hormones

-Replenish your iron

-Provide more energy for new parents

-Help the uterus return to it's pre-pregnant state more quickly

-Decrease Postpartum Depression and "baby blues"

-Increase milk supplies

-Lessen postpartum bleeding

Details of these benefits and more in-depth information about placenta encapsulation can be found here.

Placenta encapsulation is done with great care for precision and sanitation. We keep all work areas sanitized and use sterilized and new tools for each placenta.

As you go into labor, you will notify me to make sure I am prepared when the time comes. Make sure your care provider is aware of your wishes so that your placenta is handled properly after birth. Once delivered, depending on your providers policy, I will either meet you to collect the placenta or come to the birthing place to personally obtain it. If you take the placenta with you, make sure it is kept on ice and contained to maintain freshness and prevent bacteria growth.

After I collect your placenta, all the equipment will be properly sterilized before use. Using the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I will first rinse the placenta to eliminate any extraneous blood and fluid, then steam it lightly to discourage bacterial growth along with herbs. Once the placenta is thoroughly steamed and drained  of excess blood, it is sliced and dehydrated overnight to remove any moisture. After your placenta is completely dry, it will be ground and put into capsules. Most placentas average about 100-200 capsules, depending on the size of the organ.

It will take approximately 24-48 hours to receive your capsules, at which time they will need to be refridgerated and kept dry. You can take them multiple times a day, regularly, or as needed.

Though the risks are low, if you develop any illness or uncomfortable effects discontinue use.
